About Eudora

Nestled amid gently rolling hills between the lush river valleys of the Wakarusa (an Indian word meaning "Hip-deep") River to the west and north, and the mighty Kaw River to its north, Eudora, Kansas, offers the very best of small-town American life. From exquisite Victorian homes like the National Historic Registered Pilla House, to older tree-lined streets of houses straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting, to modern suburban housing developments, Eudora can meet every housing want and need.

Our picturesque downtown provides a nice mix of retail stores, nearby restaurants, professional offices, bank, library, savings and loan company, and city offices. While Eudora was once known primarily as a farming community, it now contains a well-balanced combination of agricultural, manufacturing and professional workers.

Eudora boasts a progressive mayor-council form of government which encourages positive economic development and a high quality of life for all residents, coupled with a school board and administrative staff which are committed to providing the best possible education for our children.

Working together, the city and schools provide the youth of our community with many recreational activities. A sports complex contains a football field with permanent bleachers, an asphalt running track, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and a swimming pool. Several parks, complete with picnic facilities and playground equipment, are scattered throughout the community.

Eudora Schools, with a total enrollment of approximately 1,500 students, has experienced exciting growth over the past two decades. The latest expansion phase is currently underway, thanks to a $45 million bond passed by voters in November 2007. This bond includes a new elementary school for all students in grades 1-5, as well as a new technical education center and district stadium. All existing buildings also will enjoy expansions and enhancements in the coming years, as a result of these projects.

District students consistently perform above the state and national averages on standardized testing and were awarded ten Standards of Excellence from the Kansas Department of Education in 2007. The district is characterized by small class sizes, caring faculty and high expectations in areas of academics, student behavior and extracurricular activities.

Because we value all our citizens, from youth to elderly, our senior citizens also may take advantage of a number of recreational and service programs. The 1OO-bed Eudora Nursing Center is regarded as one of the finest nursing facilities in the area. Pinecrest Apartments I, II and III provide low-cost subsidized housing for its elderly residents. One special activity enjoyed by young and old alike is the Annual CPA (Central Protective Association) Picnic held in July.

The 93-acre Intech Business Park on the southeast edge of Eudora is well-marked by its distinctive sign on a tall concrete silo. Land is still available in Intech Business Park. Industrial and warehouse/distribution businesses locating in Intech are eligible for Enterprise Zone incentives including tax credits for new jobs created, and investment in land, buildings and equipment.

A number of other incentives may be available for businesses, including, but not limited to, property tax moratoriums, Industrial Revenue Bonds, and Community Development Block Grants. Kansas is a "right to work" state and the Kansas work force contains a higher percentage of high school graduates than 42 other states. Intech attracts workers from several surrounding communities.

Eudora offers excellent law enforcement and fire protection and operates its own utility services. Water is supplied from city wells, and treated at the city's plant which has a capacity of 600,000 gallons per day. The city purchases electricity from Kansas Power & Light but owns its own system. The community is supplied natural gas by Atmos Energy. Utility plants have been updated and enlarged to provide for future growth. Eudora's municipal building, library and police and fire station are all relatively new structures.

Our community is served by four four-lane divided highways. K-10 Highway borders Eudora on the south and two interstate highways, 1-70 and 1-35, are respectively located within 10 and 20 miles, while US-59 is 10 miles west. The public airport at Lawrence is located just minutes away. The cultural advantages presented by the University of Kansas at Lawrence, six miles to the west, cannot be overlooked or overstated. The metropolitan area of Kansas City, only 20 minutes east via K-10, offers quick access to Kansas City International Airport, as well as the excitement of major league sports with Chiefs football, Royals baseball, Attack soccer and Blades hockey teams. Topeka, the state capital of Kansas, is only 40 miles west of Eudora.

A trip in any direction from Eudora will convince you that the surrounding countryside is truly beautiful.
